Review: Overruled by Emma Chase

Overruled (The Legal Briefs series, #1)
by Emma Chanse
Genre:Contemporary Romance

A Washington, DC, defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing—with his southern drawl, disarming smile, and captivating green eyes, he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him, and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart, the mother of his beloved ten-year-old daughter. Jenny is getting married—to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city-raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits," begs her for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi, to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves. Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one-stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage, and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise, and even the best-laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

(slight spoilers ahead)

I should have known but still had hope. The cover, the synopsis, just everything hinted how this book will end and what did naive me do? Yup, I had hope for the impossible :-/ So yes, after reading my first Emma Chase book I was utterly irritated, disappointed and frustrated. I DID NOT WANT IT TO END LIKE THIS!! But in the end I can only blame myself... I fell for the wrong couple, naive me fell for the young Stanton because I freaking believed him ugh!

"She's more than just my first kiss - my first everything. Jenny's my best friend. And I'm hers."

"I love you. I'll never love anyone the way I love you."

Yeah 'love me' my ass... I fell in love with this boy, I fell for his words because I wanted to believe them. I thought what they had is special (or was) and he's not just talking empty words or thinks with his little friend - boy was I wrong.

The alarm bells should have rang when reading:

"Young love is strong. First love is powerful. But what you don't know when you're young - what you can't know - how long life actually is. And the only dependable thing about it, besides death and taxes, is change."

Truer words never spoken and I should have known how this book turns out. But you see here's the thing, despite me being (most of the time) a very sarcastic chick, with a very naughty humor and making inappropriate jokes - strip all that away I'm secretly a romantic. So yeah I was pissed at Stanton for giving me false hope.

The book starts in the past and jumps to present time and it's clear how Stanton changes from the sweet loyal boy to a man who 99% thinks with his dick. He's success-driven trying to make partner at his firm and his co-worker is a smoking hot Latina. Can I blame him? Partly yes. He neglected Jenn and tried to tell himself it's not cheating what he's doing, basically stringing along two women. Sure thing he's super hot but he knows that; I'm just disappointed in his selfish way of thinking and doing this for freaking ten year!! I mean come on.... I can't even.

I know it's my fault that I didn't really like the book BECAUSE I had false hope but still, the ending felt wrong for me. Overall the book is well written, it's funny and plenty of steamy scenes.
I hoped to read about a guy who takes his promises serious and not races after the dollar signs and forgetting along the way his 'family' .

Looking back, yes the story was very predictable and readers who loved her other books will love this book for sure. I was blind and ignored the warning bells so don't let my low rating keep you from picking up this new read. I'll definitely read the other books in the series because I looked already and saw there's no other woman/man on the side, ha!
